Letter from the Chairman 2008

The games of 2007 were highly successful, the weather was perfect, the attendance was excellent and there was record entry for all events. The improvement to the park entrance and new layout enhanced the look of the field from the minute you entered and our food vending facilities which included a variety of different and enticing products to interest everyone from hamburger to hog. Last year we introduced an improved public announcement system which included commentary from the dancing. This year’s dance stage was sporting a new tartan thanks to Janet Eagleton the famous kilt and sporran maker from Murthly, who stitched together a brand new apron. The main stage was again sponsored by the Taybank Hotel of Dunkeld.

Guests from our twinned games of Livermore in California were once again in attendance and given a tremendous reception .We look forward to welcoming their delegation to our 2008 games. 2007 was the inaugural presentation of the Livermore Shield on behalf of Livermore games to the heavyweight contestant of merit on the day. The Birnam Cup will again go their Californian equivalent which I have the pleasure of presenting in person as the Honorary Chieftain of the Livermore Highland Games on the 17th & 18th May

With competition so fierce last year we will once again hope for a great turn out but for those not feeling so energetic there’s always the world famous haggis eating contest which is worth the admission on its own(sponsored by Dunkeld Butchers). We will again be giving a bottle of whisky to the furthest travelled visitor to the games, so please sign in at the secretary’s tent; you never know it could be you.

This year’s proceedings will again be officially opened with The Blairgowrie, Rattray & District pipe band who will again be playing in the Cross at Dunkeld at 11:45 am in the traditional march to the park which will start at the north car park at 12:30 pm prompt lead by our chieftain Robert Steuart Fothringham. The committee and I look forward to welcoming you in 2008 and beyond.
